Notes from the road

Fieldnotes.

Small stories behind the pictures. From assignments, from the road and from the family table.

This picture was taken for Der Feinschmecker and is one of my favourites. As so often, we had only a quick idea and time breathing down our necks, because that is exactly how we have worked for years. Laughing, Maurizio leaned into the sunlight with his skateboard, as if we had all the time in the world. Our collaboration has long since grown into a friendship that means a great deal to me. He still loves driving me mad. I happily come along every time.

At a tapas bar near Cádiz, we arrived starving and, of course, without a reservation, and every table was taken. The owner sat at a high table over his bills, politely declined at first, then saw our kids and simply gave us his workspace. The kids climbed onto the stools with delight, and we ate wonderful tapas. Afterwards, I asked him to step outside for a quick portrait. The light was not perfect. Everything else was.

For a Michelin Guide assignment, I had to create an evening mood at Restaurant Haerlin in the middle of the day. I asked the restaurant manager to close the heavy curtains, and as he stood on the ladder, I quickly took a picture. I never imagined that this photo would delight the client so much. Since then, I hardly get a briefing anymore, just the advice to do what I always do. I wish I knew what that was.

I'm not looking for the polished picture.
Just the true one.

At El Celler de Can Roca, I was allowed a glimpse of the Roca brothers' workspace, and I stood in front of it for a long time. Between an old world map and a wine crate leaned a painted portrait of the three, and in that quiet, creative clutter I suddenly felt very close to them. Back home, I tried to create a similarly inspiring chaos on my own desk. Ten minutes later, everything was back at right angles.

I photograph what happens.
Not what's supposed to happen.

In a narrow lane in Brittany, a young musician sat with his guitar in front of a blue door. Most people walked past without looking up. My kids stopped at once, listened, and dropped a few coins into his red case as if it were the most natural thing in the world. To them, any kind of art is a reason to pause. The sign pointed onward. The kids stayed.

Early in the morning, the family was still asleep in the rooftop tent, and I walked alone along the coast. At the top of the path stood an old stone house, and for a moment I saw us living there, the kids barefoot in the grass, coffee in hand, the sea right outside the door. Over breakfast I told them about it. The kids only wanted to know when we were moving in. So did I.
